HDTV? You What?

The envelope has been pushed. Not so long ago, people were taken by the first black and white tvs As TVs took off, people were generally content with whatever image was beamed into their world.Picture quality has evolved over the ages for the better. An finally, in line with the proliferation of blue ray, satellite tv and great video games, HDTV comes along and changes everyones standards once again. Gone are the days when you could be happy with washed-out colors and a low resolution. Now you want a clearer picture and sharper colors, and you want it all for an affordable price.

HDTV is where it now at.Throw out your old set top box! HDTV provides a supreme image. Picture it this way, watching a standard TV is like viewing the world through a dirty windowpane. With HDTV, there is no window. The images on the television screen are as close to lifelike as you can get, that is, without actually getting off the couch and watching real-life images. An HDTV can accomplish this feat with its high resolution; a million pixels, often more, combine to create a brilliant picture that will wow any viewer.

But whats the cost? Fortunately, prices are falling every year. Five years ago, most people were priced out of the HDTV market.

But things are not always as straight forward as they seem. You are not quaranteed crystal clarity straight out of the box.Nop, you will need a few more accessories like a blue ray dvd player or satellite decoder. This sends the HD channels to your television; without one, you can only watch standard programming. Second, you will need high-def channels. Your cable or satellite provider offers a line-up of HD channels, though the number of available HD channels is nowhere close the number of available standard channels. Third, you will need an HD show or movie. Not all shows broadcast on an HD station are necessarily high-definition; news programs are often broadcast in standard-definition, as are most daytime programs. If you are watching a standard-def show, you may see a black bar on either side of the screen. Also, since you are watching a standard-def show on a high-def screen, the picture will not be nearly as clear or as sharp as with an HD program. Only when you have all three elements - an HD box, channel and show - can you experience television like never before.

Get a “Virtual Phone Number” - Eliminate Long Distance Charges with VoIP Phone Service

There’s a revolution brewing in the telephone industry. But it’s not the recent demise of AT&T or the failure of Worldcom. It’s a new, yet proven, technology that lets you talk with friends, family and loved ones over the Internet.

It’s called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or broadband phone, and it lets you use your ordinary home or office telephone to dial and talk to anyone using the Internet as your “channel” of communication. Instead of dialing through the Bell System copper wires, you make calls through your DSL or cable Internet access provider. No microphones or headsets. Just use your existing telephone to talk throughout North America and the world.

This new technology not only saves you 50 to 60 percent on your monthly phone bill. It also provides a host of services the phone company cannot. One of these - a “virtual phone number” — can eliminate long distance charges to friends and family who want to call you. Here’s how it works.

When you order your VoIP phone service you can also order a second phone number in a distant city. For example, if you live in Philadelphia you’re in the 215 area code. And, if you have relatives in Los Angeles, you can order a virtual number in area code 818 (Los Angeles). Then, when a family member in LA wants to call you, they simply dial the 818 phone number, which is a local call for them. Amazingly enough, your phone rings in area 215. Your family gets to talk to you for the cost of a local call: for free.

Virtual numbers are great for kids going away to college. Rick and Patti live in Cleveland and have a son going to college at Kennesaw State University, near Atlanta. They can order a VoIP phone number with the Cleveland area code for the home phone, and get an Atlanta area virtual number. Then, when their son wants to call home, he makes a local Atlanta call and the phone rings at Mom and Dad’s house, 700 miles away.

Of course VoIP phone service also provides toll free numbers - usually at less than two cents per minute - giving you yet another way to make it easy for friends and family to stay in touch.

Get virtual! Join the millions of people jumping on the VoIP bandwagon and start enjoying the rich features and accessibility you can get through broadband phone service.

Allan Ramsay is a 25-year veteran of the I.T. industry and principal at http://www.VoIP-USA.net, providing voice over IP phone service, landline, long distance plans, cellular phones, cellular calling plans, broadband access to the Internet and a host of Internet and telecommunication services to residential, SOHO and small business customers nationwide.

1-Mile Away Directional Stun Gun

Stun Guns are getting more precise and more powerful each research year. Non-lethal technologies are moving ahead faster than ever before. Much of this is in response to the fight on International Terrorism the world over and America’s personal attack called the “War On Terror” and personal it is after we were attacked out of the blue on September 11, 2001.

Currently the War in Iraq and the close proximity issues with Urban Conflict non-lethal technologies are preferred as it cuts down on the collateral damage and loss of life from non-combatants and normal citizens.

Riots such as the huge riots in France, where 15,000 plus automobiles were torched with Molotov Cocktails and hundreds of structures burned in 402 cities could have used non-lethal stun gun technologies if they were properly deployed and ready to go.

Having weapons, which could literally drop armies of 100,000 or more troops to their knees in seconds is indeed a relevant weapon to prevent further blood shed. Winning a war without killing your enemy but rather having him surrender and lose his will to fight may be a very large part in the future of war.

How could this be possible you ask? Well by using stun gun technology on a massive scale, able to work at one mile or more away. Think on this in 2006.

Greater Gaming Notebook Saturation Great for Consumers

The days where laptops for gaming were a specialist sector are disappearing extremely fast. Sure they were hardly manufactured in massive quantities but resellers did generate a lot of revenue on them. Despite that everybody probably wanted one. They the the most advanced technology and just the best laptop computers. Gaming laptops would get everybody excited about what’s to come in a few years but I do not believe they would buy laptop computers like this whilst being aware the price is going to slide quickly. Things appear as it they are set to shift though because now the gaming laptops market has caught the eye of bigger manufacturers.

In contrast to the littler system builders these companies know they can generate even more markup. This would be one of the few money making lines they have as they make nothing on numerous others due to the enormous competition. With their deep marketing resources I am confident they can sway anybody to buy laptop computers like these. This is a giant threat to littler specialist system builders. I know for certain that laptops for gaming will get more accessible for many. Additionally the well known brand name will give people greater confidence.

The hype being created in regards to the new brand name gaming notebook computers is making people see them as being the best laptop computers in history. I believe this will still be the ray of light for smaller manufacturers though. Consumers like the ability to customize as they can select what is most important to their requirements. This type of prospect is normally well versed in the technical details and can evaluate the specs. Customers like these are usually more interested in the gaming capabilities of a computer than they are in it’s outward appeal.

From a buyers standpoint this is all a positive thing. In the end, the costs will be brought down even greater making the latest technology to be an alternative that we will all be able to buy. Its tough to say what could occur to be honest as the industry is a fast moving one. Prices will probably stay consistently high as there are always new things being released. We will find out what we can anticipate from the gaming notebook markets big players.

Get those clients via the web!

How to attract the clients you really want to work with, now and for years to come. The web is here to stay. Is your business?
The web allows you to market your services very effectively without even your presence for twenty-four hours a day, attracting more clients for less effort and expense.

Clients have to know what’s special about you to choose you over your competitors - and if they can get to know and trust you first, they’ll come to you even if it means travelling much further. A skilful website, put together with integrity, will build that trust and turn your visitors into clients.

The web offers so many opportunities that it’s very easy to get lost amongst them and miss that vital connection with your future clients. An effective strategy is essential to finding your way. To develop this you need to :-

Clarify what specifically you will offer

Most markets are very crowded and I encourage people not to compete but to differentiate, to emphasise what is special about their services. Specialisation pays above all else. Web clients are choosier than average and usually search for exactly what they want.

Clarify who your clients are

To best reach and interest your clients, you need to know them in detail. The service you offer partly defines them but you need to refine this, bearing in mind that clients prefer someone who has experience with people like them, resolving their specific issue, in their exact situation. Again, I encourage people to be specific, to choose who they most want to work with and focus on that group.

Review what’s available

A sound knowledge of what works on the web, the pluses and minuses of the various options, is an enormous advantage. Find out too what others in your line are doing - but resist copying! (Even if it’s working for them.) For web success it’s vital to stand out, to offer your own unique approach. Look too at your own resources, strengths and preferences. You may want to hire expert help to pull it all together but the vision has to come from you.

Clarify everything that needs to be done

A successful website that brings lots of clients needs supports including the building of credibility and appropriate publicity. You need, too, to refine your efforts, homing in on what works best for you to bring more and more clients.

All the above takes careful thought and sometimes research of the web. Alternatively, coaching is an outstandingly cost-effective way to web success. Drawing on my years of experience and knowledge of attracting clients via the web, I can coach you smoothly through to getting those clients.

What is Sleep

Sleep is the regular state of natural unconsciousness observed in all mammals, birds, and fish. It is heavily influenced by circadian rhythms and by hormonal and environmental factors as well. Sleep appears to perform a restorative function for the brain and body, as evidenced by the myriad symptoms that result when an individual is deprived of sleep.

The function of sleep in health and in disease is being increasingly studied in specialized sleep laboratories throughout the world. Not only insomnia, but also more recently elucidated sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy are evaluated in such facilities.

Before advances in the fields of neurology, neuroscience, electronics, and genetics were made, scientists studied the behavioral characteristics of sleep, such as its pattern, depth, and varying frequency. In more recent times, the electrical impulses generated by the brain are recorded using a device called an electroencephalograph (EEG), and individual genes relating to sleep-related brain function, such as the circadian rhythm, are isolated. Molecular biology, medical science and epidemiology all play an important role in modern studies of sleep.

Sleep is often defined using specific criteria relating to EEG data. All mammals and birds fulfill the criteria for sleep based on EEG recordings. In animals where EEG data is not readily available, or their small size precludes recording EEG, behavioral and gene specific data are utilized for sleep studies.

Sleep regulation

The cycle of sleep and wakefulness is regulated by the brain stem, external stimuli, and by various hormones produced by the hypothalamus. Certain neurohormones and neurotransmitters are highly correlated with sleep and wake states. For example, melatonin levels are highest during the night, and this hormone appears to promote sleep. Adenosine, a nucleoside involved in generating energy for biochemical processes, gradually accumulates in the human brain during wakefulness but decreases during sleep. Researchers believe that its accumulation during the day encourages sleep. The stimulant properties of caffeine are attributed to its negating the effects of adenosine.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus plays an important role in the regulation of circadian rhythms. The SCN is influenced by external light and generates its own rhythm in isolation. In the presence of light, it sends messages to the pineal gland that instruct it to cease secreting melanin.

Thus, three processes, each influenced by hormonal, neurological, and environmental factors, underlie sleep regulation:

A homeostatic process determined by prior sleep and wakefulness, determining “sleep need”.

A circadian process determining periods of high and low sleep propensity, and high and low REM sleep propensity.

An ultradian process.

The interrelationships and relative importance of each process and system remain uncertain.

Memory is highly dependent on sleep. REM sleep appears to help with the consolidation of spatial and procedural memory, while SWS helps with the consolidation of declarative memories. When experimental subjects are given academic material to learn, especially if it involves organized, systematic thought, their retention is markedly increased after a night’s sleep. Mere wrote memorization is retained similarly well without an intervening period of sleep.

REM sleep (or Active Sleep) seems to be particularly important to the developing organism. Studies investigating the effects of Active Sleep deprivation have shown that deprivation early in life can result in behavioral problems, permanent sleep disruption, decreased brain mass (Mirmiran et al. 1983), and an abnormal amount of neuronal cell death (Morrissey, Duntley & Anch, 2004).

According to the Ontogenetic Hypothesis of REM sleep, the activity occurring during neonatal REM sleep is necessary for proper central nervous system development (Marks et al. 1995).

Given sleep’s heterogeneous nature, it is difficult to describe a single “function” of sleep. Based on current knowledge, it is apparent that it has many functions.

Do You See Clearly?

“I don’t see how I can just make up my mind to be happy and successful; and suddenly, magically, I will be. That seems to me to be a denial of my reality. My life is a mess. I am not happy. My life is not a success.” she wrote.

She was replying to my email response to her first inquiry. She had written to ask how I could write (in a previous article in this eZine) that if you wanted to be happy, you just had to choose to be happy. I had replied, in my first email, that how we felt about ourselves and our life was entirely within our control; and once we had decided to change how we felt, thought and believed, the circumstances and conditions of our lives would change to meet our new expectations.

This conundrum is surely the ‘catch-22′ of self-improvement. You must both accept the reality of where you are at and, at the same time, deny its ultimate veracity in order to create a new, bigger and better, reality.

Now, I am not saying you should go into denial about the facts of your life. That’s a huge mistake. Many people attempt to live with their shortcomings, failures and addictions by being in denial and it does not work. Nothing gets any better that way. Often it gets even worse.

Many people also attempt to change their life by muttering some affirmation like “I am happy, healthy, wealthy and wise,” in a blind attempt to convince themselves that they are not unhappy, unhealthy, impoverished and foolish. This does not work too well either.

I am not suggesting that affirmations are not useful. They can be a very powerful tool and, used properly, they can be a big help in changing your predominant thought patterns, your core beliefs and your basic emotional outlook on life.

However, it is necessary, if we wish to improve our lot in life, to first face and accept that we have certain core beliefs, predominant thought patterns and basic emotions attitudes. Then, we also must accept that it is these very beliefs, thoughts and emotions that have created the reality that we now have in our lives.

Then, we must decide to adopt new, improved, intentional ways of believing, thinking and feeling in order to create the new reality we have idealized and desired for ourselves. This is not denial. It is the acceptance of our co-creative abilities; and, the acceptance our freedom to choose what and how to think, believe and feel. It is the taking on of the responsibility for one’s life, as it is, and as it could be.

It is the facing and accepting of the truth that we cannot blame the conditions and circumstances of our present life for how we feel, how and what we think, what we believe. It is the facing and accepting of the truth that how we have been feeling, how and what we have been thinking, what we have been believing has actually contributed to the conditions and circumstances of our lives.

What we have is a result of what we have done. What we have done is a result of how we have been. How we have been is a result of how we have felt, thought and believed about ourselves and about life as a whole.

If you want to change or improve what you have in life (the conditions, circumstances–the effects), you must address the cause. You have the power to consciously and intentionally choose your feelings, your thoughts and your beliefs. These are the cause of your happiness and success because they control how you act or react, what you do or don’t do and it is what you enact, moment-by-moment, that produces the results you get to have day-to-day.

Yes, it is tough work. However, it is not as tough as living an unhappy and unsuccessful life. Why continue to do so just because you are habituated to doing so?

So, it is not about denying the reality of how life has been until now; it is about seeing and accepting that there is a greater reality in how you choose life will be from now on. Focus your vision on the ideal. Affirm its reality. Feel its reality. Believe in its reality. Act accordingly. Don’t be surprised when it turns out to be just the way you imagined it to be.

Canadian Museum of Rail Travel

Cranbrook, BC, is home to the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and is the largest city and service center in the East Kootenay region. Many parts of the city date from 1898 and self-guided walking tours are available with maps obtainable from the Chamber of Commerce, or from the Museum.

The Canadian Pacific Railway played a major role in the development of Cranbrook. Much of the original railway infrastructure built in Cranbrook still survives, providing a good context for the development of the Railway Museum.

The renowned Canadian Museum of Rail Travel is one of the largest museums of its type in Canada, with a valuable national collection of luxurious trains from the golden age of railway travel. Open all year and located at 57 Van Horne Street South, which is Hwy 3/95 downtown. It is a must-see for any visitor to the region.

The museum contains vintage passenger train sets representing various eras from the 1880s to the 1930s. The cars are luxuriously appointed with exotic inlaid woods, brass fixtures, plush upholstery, wool carpets, period furniture, stained glass and other displays such as railway china and silverware.

The centerpiece of the train’s displays is the only complete surviving 7-car set of the famous 1929 Trans-Canada Limited, a vintage deluxe hotel on wheels. The railway constructed 12 new complete train sets comprising “A” class dining cars, “R” series sleepers (8-sections, 2-compartments, 1-drawing room), combination baggage sleeping cars (for the dining car crews) and the unique “River” class solarium-lounge cars that were at the end of the trains and especially popular. The train staff for the Limited was a little army; besides the driver-known in Canada as the “engineer”-and the fireman, the Limited had a conductor, trainman, sleeping-car conductor, one porter to each sleeping-car, a parlour-car attendant and the dining-car staff comprising of the chef, stewards and waiters. The Trans-Canada Limited, reserved for First Class passengers only, traveled from Montreal and Toronto to Vancouver, a distance of 2,886 miles. Other trains on display include the 1907 ultra-luxurious Soo-Spokane Train Deluxe. There are also cars in the museum that were used by various visiting royalty over the years and interpretive cars.

Another highlight of the building complex is the spectacular Royal Alexandra Hall, the restored 3,000 sq. ft. and three storey high “Grand Café” from the Canadian Pacific Railway’s former Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg. Demolished in 1971, the complete café was saved in hundreds of pieces and stored in a semi-trailer for 25 years before being purchased by the museum in 1999.

Besides the Railway Museum proper, there is included in the surrounding infrastructure a 10-stall Roundhouse with a 100-foot turntable from 1920 and still in use today, together with another 7 stalls from 1907 with the roof and walls removed. The Railway water tower that was built in 1946 and rebuilt in 1989 is still standing. There is also the original (from 1898) CPR Cranbrook station (although altered) and the 1901 station from Elko that was relocated to the yards in 1987. The railway Freight Shed built in 1898 forms an important part of the new museum complex of buildings, where it has two levels with a total of 10,000 sq. ft.

Just 16 kilometers to the east and north of Cranbrook, is Fort Steele Heritage Town, considered one of British Columbia’s premier heritage sites. On a daily basis, Fort Steele brings to life the Victorian age in a Rockies’ boomtown. The Fort Steele Railway takes visitors on a scenic ride behind a real steam locomotive.

The origins of Fort Steele are traced back to the small settlement of Galbraith’s Ferry, created during the Wild Horse Creek Gold Rush of 1864/65. Galbraith’s Ferry was founded after Fisherville, the white man’s town in southeastern BC. Located six kilometers up the Wild Horse River from Fort Steele, the Fisherville historic site, is well preserved by a local heritage society and offers a fascinating glimpse into how this region began.

Finding the Right Abdominal Machine

There are just so many different types of exercise equipment machines available nowadays in the body building market that it sometimes becomes hard to choose or know which one may fit you best. Therefore, before purchasing any exercise machine, it is important to seek additional information from an expert. Abdominal machines for example are those types of exercise equipment that come in so many different types that it is not as clear cut to know which one is the best work out for your abs but also which one will actually cause you back or muscle damage if not used properly.

Choosing the right abdominal machine equipment may be a challenge. If you did a web search on “abdominal machine”, thousands of links would appear which makes the selection process even harder. Most people just want to have an affordable and practical abdominal machine that ideally could fit in their living rooms and at the same time have great work out potential. This is why many seek home exercise equipment, since people’s lives have become busier by the day. Knowing just the right machine for you may be the difficult first step, but once there, it may be just as difficult to keep track of exercise schedules which requires discipline.

How to Use (and Not Confuse) Your Intuition

Have you ever had an intuition about a person or
a situation? When the thought came to you, did
you file it away or brush it aside? Later on,
did it prove to be true?

Many brilliant business ideas have been based on
someone’s intuition. When Fred Smith was in college,
he wrote a paper for an economics class about his
idea for an overnight delivery service. He got
a “C” for the paper, but that didn’t bother him.
His gut told him his idea would work, and several
years later he started Federal Express.

It’s believed that some people have more intense
intuition than others. It’s also believed to be
possible to hone your own intuitive skills.

Howard Gardner, a Harvard professor and psychologist,
says that practicing your intuition is important
to honing intuitive skills. “Gut instinct is basically
a form of pattern recognition. The more you practice,
the more patterns you intuitively recognize. List
decisions you’ve made that turned out right (and mistakes,
too). Then reconstruct the thinking patterns. Where
did intuition come in? Was it right or wrong?
Are there patterns? Highly intuitive people often let
themselves be talked out of good ideas.”

For some, their intuition usually revolves around people.
For others, it involves situations. If you’re uncertain
about the accuracy of your gut instinct, write it down
when it occurs to you.

For intuitions about people, write down your first
impression of them. Check for accuracy later. For intuitions
about situations, write those down as well, including the
date. Occasionally review what you’ve written about those
situations, and if something has changed, write that down
with the date. Review these from time to time to see how
accurate your instinct appears to be.

As thoughts come to you, take a few quiet minutes to
think and write. If the thoughts come at a busy time,
jot a few words down (or speak them into a tape recorder)
to write out in more detail later.

A few years ago I attended a local coaches’ group, and the
topic one evening was “our coaching intuition”. The
leader for that meeting told us a few brief facts about
one of his clients: her name, the state where she lives,
and one or two more general facts. Then he asked us to
quietly think about what else was going on in her life.
After a minute, he asked for comments. About four people
spoke up, saying things such as, “There is an illness
in her family that she is dealing with,” and “She really
doesn’t like her job,” and “She’s working a lot of hours,”
and “There is conflict between her and someone close
to her”, and “She doesn’t have enough free time.”
The man who is her coach said that all of those things
were true.

At first I thought, “How did these people know or figure
out all of these things?” As soon at that thought crossed
my mind, a new, intuitive thought took its place:
“She’s bored.” And then the thought continued, “Even
though she has so much going on in her life, she’s bored.
And she’s surprised that she’s bored.” I spoke these words
to her coach, and he agreed that she is quite bored.

A keen intuition is a mark of a good coach. We’re not
the only profession, however, who can greatly use
intuitive skills. Just about any business person can
benefit from a keen intuition. This is a great skill
for anyone to utilize.

Start with the suggestions in this article for practicing
using your intuition. Hone your skill over time. With
some focused attention, you will learn to trust your
gut instinct more and to take action on your instincts
sooner.
